How often have you heard of someone who burned themselves when a candle or liquid-fuel outdoor burner tipped over? It’s been so bad that Health Canada published a warning about pourable, alcohol-based fuels used in portable firepots.

Thankfully, the Smartflame fuels are safer and not subject to this Health Canada warning due to their design and safety features.

Keep reading to learn which fuels to be cautious of and how Smartflame fuels can provide soft heat without the increased risk of injury or fire damage.

What are pourable fuels?

The danger comes in the type of fuel used and when used in an unapproved container or burner. The warning states that some liquid-based fuels can tip over, pour out, and the fire can spread. It also says that the liquid-fueled flame can unexpectedly jet out of the fire pot when refilling, causing injury to an individual or catching nearby items on fire.

To mitigate these risks, they suggest using a fuel source that is ASTM F3429/F3429M-20 or similar and a portable firepot that is ASTM F3363-19 or similar.

Or, you could forego the pourable fuels in favour of Smartflame canisters.

What are Smartflame fuels?

Smartflame fuel technology from Paramount is a patented fuel design that doesn’t fall under this warning. If the canister containing the fuel and light material tips over, the spilled material will not continue to burn.

It uses a unique, patented wick to burn. When lit, the flames are contained to the can, so any spilled material is not combustible and will not spread the flame. These burner fuel cans emit a comfy 3000 BTUs of heat for up to 3 hours. You still get a thick, quality flame, like ethanol fuel cans, with the added safety benefits that alcohol-based fuels can’t provide.

Benefits of the Smartflame include:

●      No odour

●      Burns for 2.5- 3 hours each

●      100% clean burning

●      If spilled over, the spilled material does not burn, the flame stays at the wick

●      Use the can lid to snuff the flame or use a snuffer provided with your garden burner

●      Available for both indoor and outdoor use

●      Available in both regular and citronella* scent

●      (For resellers) It’s more convenient to ship than other fuels due to its not being hazardous.

*Citronella is widely thought of as a means of deterring bugs, although Health Canada prohibits it from being sold as such. It’s still a wonderfully crisp, rich citrus/lemon scent.

How to use the can:
  1. Tip the can upside down while the lid is still on so the fuel saturates the lighted material.
  2. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry the lid open gently.
  3. Place the Smartflame can in your favourite vessel or burner and use a long neck lighter to light the material in the can.
  4. Use a lid or snuffer to extinguish the flame when done.

What products can Smartflame fuels be used with?

While you could light the can independently, you’ll probably prefer it placed in a stylish garden burner or holder for added ambiance and sophistication. We love the elevated ambiance the Paramount Metal Square Garden Burner adds to your space. The Paramount brand Smartflame can fits perfectly in the middle, surrounded by glowing LED lights. The lights and flame make the included glass fire beads shimmer.
